Who We Are
Absolute Balance’s active Directors Derek Knox and Ryan O’Connor and their team of allied health professionals have been helping clients throughout WA with chronic injuries, conditions and diseases. Absolute Balance has assisted many of WA’s leading businesses improve their employees health, culture and productivity through varied health and wellness initiatives.
The company has grown to become a leading authority on clinical exercise rehabilitation and chronic disease initiatives in WA, pioneering the introduction of corporate health services, injury rehabilitation and prevention programs. In addition to Derek and Ryan, Absolute Balance now employs over 20 staff.
Derek Knox – Director
Derek is a decisive, energetic and enthusiastic leader with a high level of health and fitness industry knowledge and concepts. He is a proven identity within the health and fitness industry with highly commendable areas of employment including working with the Indian Men’s Hockey Team. He is experienced in areas of Exercise Rehabilitation, Corporate Health, Personal Development, Elite Training Methods and Company Management. Derek is the Director of Absolute Balance, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and has completed his MBA at the University of Western Australia.
Derek was a member of the North Cottesloe “J” and Australian Surfboat Crew with success at both National and International levels and in 2013 was, together with is crew, inducted into Australia’s Surf Lifesaving Sporting Hall of Fame.
Derek naturally enjoys challenging himself and the team he works with to deliver success.
Ryan O’Connor – Director
Ryan has extensive experience in the allied health sector through exercise rehabilitation within the compensable system, as well as health and wellness initiatives and programs targeting an ageing population and the comorbidities associated.
Ryan is, and continues to be, a leader in allied health. Ryan has gained national recognition with the governing body ‘Exercise & Sports Science Australia’ (ESSA) as the inaugural winner of the Australian Exercise Physiology ‘Graduate of the year’ award in 2009 as well as being published as a regular ‘Ask the Expert’ columnist in ‘Australian Men’s Fitness Magazine from 2009 – 2011.
Ryan was an industry pioneer and advocate in his position as board member for ESSA WA from 2008-2012 and has been invited to present at many professional forums on his innovative means of reducing injury and chronic disease, as well as improved long-term health outcomes for clinical populations within the community.
Ryan is a former member of state basketball team; Perry Lake Hawks and is an avid amateur boxer and triathlete enthusiast who has a passion for healthy living, nutrition and exercise.
Ingrid Hand – Complex Claims Manager
Ingrid enjoys working with a variety of populations, understanding the goals of each person, and helping them achieve their goal whether it is a simple daily movement task, a recreational activity or a sports related movement tasks.
Ingrid has previously spent time at the University of Western Australia (UWA), completing research towards her Masters of Science and Doctor of Philosophy, whilst teaching Bachelor of Science units. Ingrid’s research has focussed on lower limbs looking at muscle activation patterns of the anterior thigh, to further develop preventative and rehabilitative techniques for common knee injuries. In addition to muscle activation patterns Ingrid’s research has also addressed hip and ankle joint angles during a variety of activities from simple walking tasks to complex closed kinetic chain activities.
Ingrid’s teaching at UWA has included both Sports Science, Exercise and Health units, and Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology units. These units have included a variety of topics relating to the human body and daily function including; structure of musculature, skeletal tissues, and organs, as well as border topics of evolution and genetics. Ingrid has also taught Practical Aspects of Movement units focussing on volleyball to develop and teach motor patterns to students and the foundations of learning new sports skills.
